Klara Kager is a researcher and lecturer at the University of Potsdam (Germany). She completed her dissertation on Lesson Study in spring 2023 (“Critical Research Needs in Lesson Study: Then, Now, and Looking Forward”).
Her research focuses on models of continuous professional development, transparency in research and intervention studies, and how teachers can maximize their learning in Lesson Study through critical and collaborative reflection. She is the project manager of Germany’s biggest Lesson Study project, which is part of the nation-wide collaborative initiative “Leistung macht Schule” (“Excellence at School”).
Michiel van Harskamp recently obtained his PhD degree at the Freudenthal Institute of Utrecht University. His work focused on using Lesson Study as a means to research the potential of a Socio-Scientific Inquiry-Based approach to teaching Environmental Citizenship issues through science education at lower secondary level. During this four year project, which involved a Lesson Study team of six teachers all the way through, he collected data on student learning and on teacher learning. Currently, Michiel is working at the University of Antwerp, after which he will rejoin the Freudenthal Institute in 2024.
Iris Uffen is a Dutch PhD candidate at the Teacher Education Department of the University of Groningen. Her research project is one of the research grants that the Dutch consortium Lesson Study NL (www.LessonStudyNL.nl) had acquired. Her research focuses on teachers’ learning processes during Lesson Study, and the facilitators’ role in optimizing these learning processes. For this, she mostly conducts qualitative analysis using transcribed Lesson Study conversations. She is currently in the final stage of her Ph.D. trajectory.
