Museum de Fundatie

Museum de Fundatie owns and manages an extensive collection of visual art from all centuries of history. It is based on the collection of Dirk Hannema (1895-1984). The collection and exhibitions can be seen at two locations: Kasteel het Nijenhuis, with a sculpture garden, in Heino/Wijhe and at Museum de Fundatie in Zwolle.

Museum de Fundatie’s collection includes works by Joseph Mallord William Turner, Antonio Canova, Edgar Degas, Vincent van Gogh, Franz Marc, Francis Picabia, Piet Mondrian, Marino Marini, Karel Appel and Neo Rauch, among others.

De Fundatie Zwolle
The palace at the Blijmarkt is Museum de Fundatie’s location in Zwolle. These neo-classicistic premises were erected between 1838 and 1841, based on a design by the architect Eduard Louis de Coninck from The Hague.

The building served as the Palace of Justice and later housed the National Department for Town and Country Planning. In 2004/2005 the building was converted into an art museum in accordance with a design by the architect Gunnar Daan. The museum was spectacularly renovated in 2012 and since 1 June 2013 open to the public. ‘THE EYE’, or ‘The cloud’, is what the elliptically shaped superstructure on the roof is called by the Museum de Fundatie itself. But already numerous other nicknames are going around: ‘the egg’, ‘the UFO’, ‘the Zeppelin’ or ‘the spaceship’. De Fundatie Zwolle mainly hosts changing exhibitions, interspersed with pieces from its own collection.

Kasteel het Nijenhuis

Kasteel Het Nijenhuis is one of the best preserved manor houses in the province of Overijssel. It is situated between the villages of Heino and Wijhe in an area of great natural beauty. Its history begins in the late Middle Ages, the first record dating from 1382. Until 1984, Kasteel het Nijenhuis was inhabited by the Fundatie’s founder, Dirk Hannema. The sculpture garden around the castle consists of ornamental gardens interspersed with woods. Over a 100 sculptures from the collections of Museum de Fundatie, Museum Beelden aan Zee and Provincie Overijssel are exhibited here, next to works from the collection as well as changing exhibitions in the castle itself.
