Beijing Normal University

General Information

Beijing Normal University is a renowned institution of higher education known for teacher education, education science and other liberal arts and sciences, directly administrated by Chinese Ministry of Education. Since its foundation in 1902, the university has adhered to some decent traditions, Patriotism, Progress, Honesty, Sincerity, Truth-Seeking, Innovation, Paragon of virtue and learning, which aptly embody the spirit of motto that Learn, so as to instruct others and Act, to serve as example to all. The main campus covers 169.8 acres, including 3 faculties, 26 schools, 2 departments, 40 research institutes (centers), 2 libraries that boast over 4.54 million volumes, 7.65 million digital books and other basic facilities.

Double First-Rate University

In September, 2017, Beijing Normal University was elected to be A-class Double First-rate university (Double First-rate indicates first-rate university and discipline in the world) with 11 disciplines on the list of Double First-Rate Disciplines by Chinese Ministry of Education, Ministry of Finance and NDRC. As 2016/2017 World University Rankings released by QS, BNU ranks 8 on Chinese mainland. Besides, Beijing Normal University is on the first list of Nation’s Ten Key Universities, “211 Project” and “985 Project” Construction program.  

International Cooperation

Beijing Normal University promotes broad international cooperation and exchange. Cooperative agreements have been signed with nearly three hundred universities and research institutes from over thirty nations or regions, so as to exchange students through cooperative programs with over fifty universities. Moreover, BNU has co-operated with Manchester University (UK), San Francisco State University (US), Oklahoma University (US) and so on, to establish 7 Confucius Institutes. In addition, all types of Chinese and foreign academic exchange conferences are held there almost every day.

Faculty of Education, BNU

Established in 2009, the Faculty of Education (FOE) at Beijing Normal University is a renowned national leader in advancing knowledge and learning through teaching practices, research projects and public services in education and related fields. FOE was grounded on the exceptional success of the specialty of education at BNU, which was the first in China to award master’s and doctoral degrees in education, found post-doctoral scientific research mobile stations, and get the authority to award doctoral degrees in education as a first-level discipline.

FOE is a high-end hub for international academic exchange. Up to now, FOE has signed bilateral or multilateral agreements with over 30 renowned universities worldwide. It has established the International Network of Educational Institution (INEI) along with other 9 top education schools in the world as one of the organizers. Each year, FOE sponsors numerous high-level international conferences and invites more than 200 distinguished scholars to lecture.

Center for Teacher Education Research (CTER), BNU

CTER is one of the Key Institutes of Humanities and Social Sciences at Universities, Ministry of Education. Established in 2004, CTER is the only national key research center served for teacher education. The founding director of CTER is Prof. Zhong Binglin, the former president of BNU. The current director of CTER is Prof. Zhu Xudong. Prof. Li Qiong, the chairman of Institute of Teacher Education, Faculty of Education, serves as the deputy director. CTER becomes the center of cultivating teacher education talents by flexible, open and efficient research mechanism, unification of researchers of different subjects, international and domestic academic exchanges, and comprehensive researches on teacher education. CTER serves as a think tank of teacher education for academic research, policy consultation and international exchange, which provides knowledge support and service for teacher professional development. It focus on four areas: Teacher Education History and Theory, Teacher Education Administration and Policy, Teacher Education Curriculum and Pedagogy, Teacher Leadership and Professional Development. Currently, CTER ranks 15th among 135 Key Research Institutes of Humanities and Social Sciences in China.
