PhD and Early Career Researchers Day

Theme : Revisiting Lesson and Learning Studies: Blending the Old with the New
Date     : November 28, 2021

Welcome Speech

Dr. Sean Li

Co-Chairperson of WALS 2021

Executive President of City University of Dongguan

Former Pro-Rector of City University of Macau

Keynote Speakers

Dr. Ming Fai Pang

Associate Professor
Faculty of Education
The University of Hong Kong

Dr. Ming Fai Pang is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Hong Kong. His research interest mainly focuses on disciplinary learning and teaching, with research expertise in phenomenography, variation theory of learning, and lesson study/learning study. Over the past few years, he has led a number of externally-funded research projects, such as “the use of learning study to enhance domain-specific generic capability”, “improving learning through systematic use of variation and invariance” and “effects of similarities and differences between examples chosen to facilitate learning”. Currently, he is the Associate Editor of the SSCI journal ‘Educational Research Review’ by Elsevier and the Co-Editor of the ‘International Journal of Lesson and Learning Studies’ by Emerald. He was the holder of the Carl and Thecla Lamberg’s Visiting Professorship of the University of Gothenburg, Sweden in 2009-2010 and the recipient of the Gambrinus Fellowship of TU Dortmund University, Germany in 2015-2016.

Dédé de Haan

PhD Candidate
Freudenthal Institute for Science and Mathematics Education
Utrecht University

Dédé de Haan has been working as a mathematics teacher educator in initial teacher education for lower secondary since 2001: at the University of San Carlos, Cebu City, the Philippines; at HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht (2003-2012) and at NHLStenden University of Applied Sciences (2013-now). Beside this job, Dédé has been working at the Freudenthal Institute of Utrecht University since 1993, mainly as a designer of mathematics education. Dédé got introduced to Lesson Study in 2014, when Dr. Siebrich de Vries introduced Lesson Study in the north of the Netherlands. Together with Dr. Gerrit Roorda, they facilitated several groups of mathematics teachers, pioneering with implementing Lesson Study. Through several WALS Conferences, Dédé got interested in Learning Study, the version of Lesson Study in which variation theory plays an important role. Recently, she got the opportunity to start her PhD research in the field of Learning Study, with Dr. Paul Drijvers (Utrecht University), Dr. Siebrich de Vries and Dr. Gerrit Roorda in the supervision team. Her objective is to enhance both mathematical content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge of the novice teachers-to-be at NHLStenden University of Applied Sciences: the students will conduct a Learning Study during the last semester of their program, within their respective schools.
