Welcome to WALS 2024 – the 18th World Association of Lesson Studies International Conference. It will take place in Astana, Kazakhstan.

The host organization is the Center of Excellence of Autonomous Educational organization “Nazarbayev Intellectual schools” (CoE). The CoE activity includes organizing and conducting in-service teacher training professional courses through which Lesson Study has been introduced since 2012. The Center of Excellence is the ”voice” of this approach and has become the ambassador of Lesson study in the Republic of Kazakhstan. Due to active links with Japanese experts of Lesson Study, connections with Cambridge University fellows and participation in International WALS conferences since 2015 Kazakhstani teachers have become a significant part of the world Lesson Study community in a short time.

As the Conference organizers, we hope that with the theme “Lesson Studies: Aspiring to Better Learning and Teaching”, this conference will bring together the advocates of this approach. We are delighted to invite international delegates and local teachers to participate in this conference by sharing research on improving the quality of teaching and learning and communicating experiences and practices in Lesson Study.

Besides Kazakhstan is a country with a big territory, extensive tourist potential and incredible flavor. Many tourists are just beginning to discover this country, but its popularity and attractiveness for travelers is growing every year. We hope that this conference will be an excellent opportunity to combine the visit to one of the youngest capitals in the world and a great intellectual experience.
