PhD and Early Career Researchers Day

There are two main activities planned for PhD and Early Career Researchers Day.

Keynote Speeches

  • Tijmen Schipper and Pauline Mangulabnan will be sharing their journey on a long and winding road towards a PhD, from two perspectives: early career researcher and PhD student.
  • This session is a shared session for participants from all time zones

Group Work

  • Participants will work in small groups to discuss the methodological issues they are facing in their research.
  • The topic discussed in each group is based on the interest indicated by the participant via the questionnaire during the registration.
  • Each group will be facilitated by an invited expert.
  • There will be two sessions, and participants will be assigned to either group based on their time zones.

Keynotes

Dr. Tijmen Schipper

Dr. Tijmen Schipper currently works as an associate professor Lifelong Learning within the Business, Media and Law faculty of Windesheim University of Applied Sciences in Zwolle, the Netherlands. Beside this part-time role, he is a manager and head of curriculum within the teacher training department for vocational education at the same university. Tijmen was the first Dutch PhD student in the field of Lesson Study and obtained his PhD in 2019 on the dissertation ‘Teacher professional learning through Lesson Study. An examination of Lesson Study in relation to adaptive teaching competence, teacher self-efficacy, and the school context’. His work is published in various peer-reviewed journals. In 2019, Tijmen was the chairman of the WALS 2019 PhD pre-conference day.

Pauline Anne Therese Mangulabnan

Pauline is a Ph.D. student at the Graduate School of Humanities and Sciences, Nara Women’s University. Her research theme is ‘Writing Reflective Practice Records as a Means for Collaborative and Reflective Inquiry, Practice-based Knowledge Creation, and School-based Professional Development: Writing Towards Professional Development.’ She obtained her bachelor’s degree and master units from the Science Education Department, De La Salle University, Manila, and her Master of Education from the Department of Professional Development of Teachers, University of Fukui, where she is currently working. Before coming to Japan, she taught Mathematics for eight years. She is currently involved in the working group of OECD Education 2030 project as a researcher of OECD-JAPAN Innovative School Networks, and involved in reflective lesson study initiatives in sub-Saharan Africa through the JICA Knowledge Co-Creation Program. Her current personal research projects are an online pedagogical collaboration between Filipino and Chilean teachers and grass-root lesson studies in the Philippines.
