The University of Stavanger (Norway) and University of Malawi (Malawi) have since 2013 been collaborating in several development projects using Lesson Study with the aim of improving the quality and capacity of Malawi mathematics education. The most recent project is “Strengthening numeracy in early years primary education through professional development of teachers”, sponsored by The Norwegian Program for Capacity Development in Higher Education and Research for Development (2017-2021). Altogether, 120 primary school teachers will be introduced to and work with Lesson study as professional development. Each year, one group of 40 teachers will participate in two workshops on Lesson Study and teaching of mathematics (3 days each time, in May and November). In-between, the teachers with support from the PD facilitators plan and teach a research lesson.
