Add-on Experiences

There are several innovative and exciting add-on experiences that you can choose to purchase while at the WALS conference. These include research lessons, focused education sessions, WALS Dinner Reception, and PhD Early Career Conference. These experiences cost extra and take place on specific dates/times.

School Visits

School Research Lessons

A number of San Francisco schools will be hosting research lessons on Tuesday December 1, 2020.  Lesson Study in San Francisco Unified School District (Lesson Study in SF).   You will experience a pre-lesson discussion, research lesson and post-lesson discussion focused on either mathematics, project-based learning or english language arts. The cost includes a light lunch (meat, vegetarian and gluten free options will be available).  PLEASE NOTE: Transportation to the school is not included. Detailed directions and the school address will be provided 4 weeks prior to the event. All schools are located within 8 miles from downtown San Francisco and can be reached by public transport.

Focused Educational Sessions

Personalized Learning

Through a Research-Practice Partnership with Stanford University a 12 school pilot has set out an intentional design for historically underserved student populations (African American students, ELLs, students with IEPs) by leveraging technology and flexible learning environments to promote 21st Century competencies. This educational session will be hosted at one of the K-5 Personalized Learning Environment pilot schools and will include a presentation outlining how the 4 mindsets (equity and agency, process over product, pull versus push, and addition by subtraction) creates the conditions and culture that empower students as unique and self-driven learners.  You will also experience a classroom visit to see these practices in action! iLab and Design Thinking

iLab was designed as a critical lever in 2014 to develop an innovative system that progresses toward San Francisco school district’s Vision 2025.  The iLab is a physical space, a process, and a curriculum that fosters innovation across our organization so that all of our students graduate ready to thrive in the 21st century.  It leverages human-centered design as a signature practice to build environments and practices that serve all of our students and their adult allies.  This educational session will be hosted at one of the iLab/Design Thinking environments and will include a presentation on the design work the iLab facilitates within SFUSD, engagement with the iLab’s tools and resources, and case studies of its work with schools and departments. The cost includes a light lunch (meat and vegetarian options will be available).  PLEASE NOTE: Transportation to the school is not included. WALS Dinner Reception

The conference dinner will take place on Thursday, December 3 at San Francisco State at the end of the conference day and is a true highlight in the social program of WALS 2020 and provides an opportunity for all participants to relax and enjoy meeting each other outside the regular program. Entertainment will be provided during the evening.

Ph. D. Early Career Program

An opportunity to connect and learn alongside other Early Career/Ph.D. researchers from around the world about their Lesson Study research. Early Career/Ph.D. conference attendees will Meet-up at the end of the first day of the conference, Wednesday December 2nd, (4.30pm-6pm) to get to know each other and share their research ideas. The full conference day on Saturday, December 5th (9am – 4pm) includes morning and afternoon refreshments and lunch.
