Dear colleagues,

You are cordially invited to join us at the World Association of Lesson Studies International Conference 2009 (WALS 09).

Lesson Study, one of the pedagogical innovations and professional development approaches, has emerged in different parts of the world over the past decades. The practice is being adopted increasingly by educators and it is constructive and effective in fostering teaching and learning, professional development and learning communities.

Last year, the WALS 08 Conference was organized in Hong Kong, with the aggregated number of participants being almost 500. Numerous academics, researchers and practitioners from all over the world, including Canada, Japan, Singapore and also Sweden, shared their research findings on Lesson Studies at the Conference. With their eager participation, invaluable experiences and brilliant views on Lesson Studies were aired and exchanged, which contributed to a fruitful conference.

This year, we are glad to announce that WALS 09 will be held by the World Association of Lesson Studies in Hong Kong again in December 2009 with the support of the Hong Kong Institute of Education. Through the WALS 09 Conference, we hope that insightful ideas on the intricate network of knowledge building in the context of Lesson and Learning Study will be identified, explored and developed.

The theme for the forthcoming conference is “Collaborative Knowledge Creation through Lesson and Learning Study”. It reflects our shared belief that knowledge is created collaboratively in diverse pedagogical situations and through interactions between stakeholders.

On behalf of the WALS 09 Organizing Committee, we would like to welcome your participation in WALS 09. Without your contribution, remarkable success for the WALS 09 will not be achieved. For further enquiries, please write to me at wals@ied.edu.hk. We look forward to welcoming you in Hong Kong.

KO Po Yuk (Dr.)
Chairperson of the Organizing Committee of the Conference
